*A March, 1923 Patchogue Advance article contained
these details:
The Patchogue Chamber of Commerce was organized March 4, 1923. Temporary
officers were chosen and an Organization Committee of twenty-four representative
business and professional men was named to form a permanent organization. The
sum of $5,027 was subscribed by 144 persons towards the first year's budget, and
this amount is expected to be increased to $8000, as more than one hundred
prospective members were unable to attend the Organization Meeting. the meeting
was held in the auditorium, as the Supreme Court Chambers were unable to
accommodate all who desired to attend.
Dr. E. Agate Foster presided and H.S. Conklin recorded. After stating the
purpose of the gathering, the matter of a Chamber of Commerce was discussed at
length and met with favor. Dr. Foster was elected Temporary Chairman and Mr.
Conklin, Secretary Protempore. Motion by Dr. C. O'Leary.
Edmund H. Bullis, Industrial Secretary of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce,
outlined the objects of a Chamber of Commerce and told how Patchogue's
prospective Chamber should be formed. He asked for subscriptions for membership,
stating that there would be three classes of subscribers, $100, $25 and $12.
Surrogate Robert Pelletreau and Jerome Ackerly immediately subscribed $200
towards financing the proposition. So many others enrolled that Mr. Bullis had
to have three secretaries to copy down the names of subscribers. More than three
hundred attended the meeting and out of that number two gave $200, 33 subscribed
$100 each, two $50, 61 pledged $25, and 46 $12. Following the compilation of
subscriptions, the meeting adjourned with the appointment of the following
Committee which will solicit new members, elect officers and select a salaried
secretary:
Sidney Gerard, William H. Aldrich, Frank Lightbody, Samuel Jacoby, Abraham
Ratchit, John R. Swezey, Arthur Swezey, A.F. Herrmann, Herbert Austin, Edgar A.
Sharp, Robert W. Pelletreau, Dr. C. O'Leary, Howard S. Conklin, John Tuttle,
